Wood in Saju: one direction, several paths
A tree and a climbing plant do not take up space in the same way. These two images introduce Wood in Saju: a direction taking shape, growth finding a way through. If your core element is Wood, start with its yin or yang form, then place it within the season and your chart as a whole.
Choosing a direction, finding a way through
Wood evokes growth in traditional imagery. You might picture a trunk standing upright, a branch unfolding or a shoot growing around a stone. These scenes need not tell the same story: one helps you think about direction, another about adaptation.
In daily life, they can open up two different questions. When you prepare for a busy week, what gives you a sense of direction? And when an appointment changes, what room do you have to reorganise the rest? These are prompts for observation, not qualities automatically assigned by your element.
Saju remains a symbolic tool for reflection, without prediction or diagnosis. You can recognise one aspect of an image, qualify another and leave aside what does not speak to you.
Yang Wood and yin Wood: two starting points
The stem 甲 represents yang Wood. The familiar image of a tall tree emphasises a visible axis and continuity. It can help you consider what you want to build over time. Its purpose is not to tell you to stand firm everywhere, but to ask what is worth holding steady.
The stem 乙 represents yin Wood. A flexible or climbing plant offers another image: finding support, taking a detour, seizing an opening. This can invite you to look at your adjustments. The useful question then becomes: when does adapting help you, and when does it erase your preference?
These metaphors facilitate discovery. They do not replace the relationships between the different positions of the chart, nor do they rank one shape above the other.
In the spring, growth is at the forefront
Traditional solar spring begins around early February. It gives Wood its reference context: renewal and growth. This does not describe the actual temperature at your birthplace. A symbolic calendar and local weather answer different questions.
Wood can also be present in a summer, autumn or winter birth. The image then has a different setting: heat and water in summer, pruning in autumn, waiting and warmth in winter. A single association cannot reveal a person’s full needs.
From Water to Wood, from Wood to Fire
In the generation cycle, Water nourishes Wood, which nourishes Fire. To remember the sequence, imagine watering a plant, then wood feeding a flame. This helps you remember the order of the relationships without learning an isolated list.
In a chart, this relationship is considered alongside the others. Adding Water is not personal advice drawn from your element alone. You do not have to choose activities, food or people close to you based on this arrow.
With the other elements
Metal controls Wood; Wood controls Earth. A tool that cuts and roots that open the soil make both directions easy to remember. Fire and Water belong to the generation relationship here. Each connection has its own place in the system.
In a human relationship, “control” does not predict conflict. A conversation, shared habit or real disagreement calls for listening to people. The names of their elements do not give a verdict. The free chart helps you discover your reference points before exploring these distinctions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are core Wood and a Wood year the same thing?
No. The first comes from the day stem; the second is an annual reference point. First, check their positions in the chart.
Is yin Wood less sturdy?
Yin is not a rating of sturdiness. The two forms make distinctions within the reading; the plant images remain teaching aids.
Where can I understand all the arrows?
The five elements guide brings the two cycles together, placing Wood’s connections within the bigger picture.
